Texas's limited X-ray rules
The Texas Medical Board (TMB) certifies Limited Medical Radiologic Technologists (LMRTs). The exam is the ARRT Limited Scope exam, administered for TMB by ARRT. You take the Core plus one or more modules, and passing the Core and at least one module makes you eligible for an LMRT certificate in those categories.
TMB's categories are skull, chest, spine, extremities and podiatric, plus chiropractic, which is the Spine and Extremities modules together. TMB's page says all sections of the exam must be passed at 75%.
Worth knowing
- You must pass within 1 year of Board authorization; after 3 attempts, 60 hours of remedial work is required.
- A temporary LMRT license is no longer needed to sit the exam (Rule 186.13, current version effective January 9, 2025).
- The separate cardiovascular limited category uses the CCI invasive registry exam (minimum 70), not the ARRT Limited Scope exam.

Choose Texas when you sign up and your practice questions, micro lessons and timed mock exams cover the core and the chest, extremities, skull/sinuses, spine and podiatric modules, with nothing from modules Texas doesn't use. Mock exams are weighted like the real one and scored section by section; we call you ready at 75% on every section.

Texas limited X-ray FAQ
What's the difference between an LMRT and a Non-Certified Technician (NCT) in Texas?
An LMRT passes the ARRT Limited Scope exam for the categories on their certificate. A Non-Certified Technician is placed on TMB's NCT registry after the mandatory training in Board Rule 186.26 and works under a Texas physician's supervision; TMB's NCT page mentions the Jurisprudence Exam, not the ARRT Limited Scope exam. Check TMB's NCT page for the current requirements.
How many times can I take the Texas LMRT exam?
You must pass within 1 year of Board authorization, and after 3 attempts TMB requires 60 hours of remedial work before you test again.
Which Texas category covers chiropractic X-rays?
TMB's chiropractic category maps to the ARRT Spine and Extremities modules together.
Which modules are on the Texas LMRT exam?
The core (patient care, radiation safety and image production) plus Chest, Extremities, Skull/Sinuses, Spine and Podiatric. You don't have to take every module: you take the core plus the ones for the body areas you want on your license.
What score do I need to pass the Texas LMRT exam?
75% on the core and on each module. Limited X-Ray Prep only calls you ready once you reach 75% on every section.
