Louisiana's limited X-ray rules
Louisiana created a new Limited X-Ray Machine Operator (LXMO) permit in 2025 (LAC 46:LXVI.1131, promulgated June 2025) under the Louisiana State Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners. You must be in a board-approved LXMO program and pass the ARRT Limited Scope exam for a full two-year permit.
The LXMO scope covers chest, extremities, abdomen, skull/sinuses and spine. The rule doesn't list required modules or a passing score, and ARRT has no abdomen module, so check with the board about how each area is tested.
Worth knowing
- 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
- An older pathway also exists: a private radiologic technologist certificate under the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LAC 46:XLV.2905) for physician-office operators; its exam rules weren't confirmed.
Some of Louisiana's details aren't stated on an official page we could read. Check with your state board before you apply or register for an exam.
