Kentucky's limited X-ray rules

Kentucky's Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (KBMIRT) licenses Limited X-ray Machine Operators (LXMOs) in one category: general, podiatry or bone densitometry. The exam is the Kentucky Limited Scope Exam, administered by ARRT (201 KAR 46:081).

The general scope includes the thorax, lungs and ribs, abdomen, skull and facial bones, upper and lower extremities and spine. The regulation doesn't say which ARRT modules make up the general exam, so confirm with KBMIRT. The regulation was amended in 2025 (effective November 12, 2025).

Worth knowing

  • The exam must be passed within 1 year of finishing your program.
  • Bone densitometry is a separate DXA-only category whose curriculum follows the ARRT Bone Densitometry Equipment Operator content, plus 6 months of supervised clinical work.

Some of Kentucky's details aren't stated on an official page we could read. Check with your state board before you apply or register for an exam.
