Maine's limited X-ray rules
Maine's Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners licenses Limited Radiographers. The application (revised August 2022) has a Limited Scope of Practice in Radiology exam checkbox and requires ARRT approval to sit the exam; proof of passing is needed for the license.
Maine caps the scope: a limited radiographer may train in and practise no more than two of skull, spine, chest, extremities and podiatry (02-465 ch. 6 s.6; ch. 8 s.5). We couldn't read the exam section of the rules, so the passing score isn't known.
Some of Maine's details aren't stated on an official page we could read. Check with your state board before you apply or register for an exam.
What you'll study for Maine
Choose Maine when you sign up and your practice questions, micro lessons and timed mock exams cover the core and the chest, extremities, skull/sinuses, spine and podiatric modules, with nothing from modules Maine doesn't use. Mock exams are weighted like the real one and scored section by section; we call you ready at 75% on every section.
| Section | Practice questions | Micro lessons |
|---|---|---|
| Core (patient care, radiation safety, image production) | 1,806 | 132 |
| Chest | 242 | 11 |
| Extremities | 718 | 41 |
| Skull/Sinuses | 134 | 10 |
| Spine | 232 | 12 |
| Podiatric | 148 | 10 |
A question or lesson that fits two sections is counted in both.

Maine limited X-ray FAQ
How many body areas can a Maine limited radiographer cover?
No more than two of skull, spine, chest, extremities and podiatry (02-465 chapter 6 section 6 and chapter 8 section 5).
Is the Core required in Maine?
The ARRT Limited Scope exam is built as a Core plus procedure modules, so the Core is presumably required, but the Maine pages we read don't say so. Check with the Maine board.
Which modules are on the Maine limited scope exam?
Maine limits you to two of skull, spine, chest, extremities and podiatry, presumably with the ARRT Limited Scope Core. When you sign up you can drop the modules outside your two areas.
What score do I need to pass the Maine limited scope exam?
Not published; we prep you to 75% on every section. Limited X-Ray Prep only calls you ready once you reach 75% on every section. Check the current pass mark with your state board.
