Maryland's limited X-ray rules
Maryland registers Limited X-Ray Machine Operators (LXMOs) through the Board of Physicians. Every candidate passes the same fixed set: the ARRT Limited Scope Core plus Chest, Spine and Extremities. There's no Skull/Sinuses or Podiatric option.
SB 915 (Chapter 214 of 2026, effective October 1, 2026) puts LXMO registration into statute. The scope is chest, spine and upper and lower extremities only, with no CT, fluoroscopy or mammography, and supervision on-site or immediately available.
Worth knowing
- Training: 115 didactic hours, 480 clinical hours under an ARRT RT, 6 months of clinical care experience, and competencies in chest, spine and upper and lower extremities.
- 3-year registration; 24 CE hours every 2 years.
- Passing the full ARRT Radiography exam does not substitute, and the Board has approved no alternative exam.
