Pennsylvania's limited X-ray rules

Pennsylvania hasn't registered auxiliary personnel since April 12, 2018. Instead, people doing limited radiologic procedures must pass a Board-approved exam or hold a recognized certification, and the supervising doctor keeps the proof.

The Board of Medicine (49 Pa. Code 18.202) recognizes two ARRT limited exams: Limited Radiography (thorax and extremities, from chest and shoulder to foot and soft tissue) and Limited Radiography, Skull and Sinuses. Spine isn't in the Board of Medicine's limited scope.

Worth knowing

  • The rules date from 1987 and 1991 and name exams, not today's ARRT modules. Limited Radiography as Core plus Chest and Extremities, and Skull and Sinuses as Core plus Skull/Sinuses, is inferred.
  • The podiatry, chiropractic and osteopathic boards set their own rules and accept credentials such as ASPMA and ACRRT.

Some of Pennsylvania's details aren't stated on an official page we could read. Check with your state board before you apply or register for an exam.

No. Since April 12, 2018 the licensing boards no longer register auxiliary personnel. You pass a Board-approved exam or hold a certification, and the supervising doctor keeps the proof.

Is spine X-ray allowed for limited operators in Pennsylvania?

Which modules are on the Pennsylvania limited scope exam?

The core (patient care, radiation safety and image production) plus Chest, Extremities and Skull/Sinuses. You don't have to take every module: you take the core plus the ones for the body areas you want on your license. Parts of this aren't stated on an official page; confirm with the board before you register.
