Ohio's limited X-ray rules
Ohio's Department of Health licenses General X-ray Machine Operators (GXMOs). The exam is Ohio's own GXMO examination, delivered for ODH by D&S Diversified Technologies (Headmaster), not the ARRT Limited Scope exam.
GXMO clinical training modules (OAC 3701-72-04(F)) are chest and abdomen, extremities, skull and sinus, spine, podiatric and bone densitometry, and your license is limited to the modules you've completed. Whether the exam differs by category isn't stated officially.
Worth knowing
- ARRT- or ACRRT-certified radiographers are exempt from the exam (OAC 3701-72-02, effective August 31, 2025).
- The ODH GXMO syllabus (revised February 2025) outlines the exam content.
- Pending SB 324 would exempt GXMOs who passed ARRT limited scope modules for their area; it wasn't confirmed enacted.
Some of Ohio's details aren't stated on an official page we could read. Check with your state board before you apply or register for an exam.

Only the clinical training modules you've completed: chest and abdomen, extremities, skull and sinus, spine, podiatric and bone densitometry (OAC 3701-72-04(F)).
Which modules are on the Ohio GXMO exam?
Ohio's GXMO license follows your completed clinical modules (chest and abdomen, extremities, skull and sinus, spine, podiatric, bone densitometry). Its exam outline is in the ODH GXMO syllabus, so we cover the full core and all five body-area modules.
