New Mexico's limited X-ray rules

New Mexico's Environment Department (Radiation Control Bureau) licenses Limited Practice Radiographers (LPRs). The exam is New Mexico's own "state examination for limited practice of radiography": a core section plus body-area sections, written or computerized, given by the department or a contractor (20.3.20.310 NMAC).

The body areas are viscera of the thorax (chest), extremities, axial/appendicular skeleton, foot/ankle/lower leg (podiatric) and dentistry. Whether the contractor is ARRT, and so whether the exam is the ARRT Limited Scope core and modules, isn't confirmed.

Worth knowing

  • After 3 failures, remedial training consistent with ARRT standards is required.
  • A 2026 draft amendment of 20.3.20 NMAC exists; we saw no change to the LPR exam in it.

Some of New Mexico's details aren't stated on an official page we could read. Check with your state board before you apply or register for an exam.

New Mexico limited X-ray FAQ

Does New Mexico use the ARRT Limited Scope exam?

New Mexico gives its own state examination for limited practice of radiography, run by the department or a contractor. Whether that contractor is ARRT isn't confirmed, so check with the Radiation Control Bureau.

What happens if I fail the New Mexico LPR exam three times?

After three failures New Mexico requires remedial training consistent with ARRT standards before you test again.

Which modules are on the New Mexico LPR exam?

The core (patient care, radiation safety and image production) plus Chest, Extremities, Skull/Sinuses, Spine and Podiatric. You don't have to take every module: you take the core plus the ones for the body areas you want on your license. Parts of this aren't stated on an official page; confirm with the board before you register.

What score do I need to pass the New Mexico LPR exam?

75% on the core and on each body-area section you attempt. Limited X-Ray Prep only calls you ready once you reach 75% on every section.
