Ripple falls from 100% single-phase to under 1% high-frequency; HL7 carries orders and DICOM carries images.

Transformers

A transformer changes voltage by mutual induction and works only with alternating current. The step-up (high-voltage) transformer raises the incoming voltage to the kilovolts that drive electrons across the tube and lowers the current; its output follows the turns ratio, so secondary voltage equals primary voltage times secondary turns divided by primary turns. The step-down (filament) transformer lowers voltage and raises current to heat the filament. The autotransformer has a single coil, works by self-induction and supplies a selectable voltage to the primary of the high-voltage transformer, which is how the console sets kVp. A line voltage compensator keeps the incoming supply steady.
