Pediatric hips: DDH, Perthes and SCFE

Babies' hips go to ultrasound; older children get an AP pelvis and frog-leg; an unstable slipped hip is not frogged.

Babies and DDH

Developmental dysplasia of the hip, DDH, is a shallow or unstable hip socket in an infant. Under about 4 to 6 months the femoral heads are still cartilage and do not show on x-ray, so ultrasound is used. After the heads ossify, an AP pelvis shows the hips. Keep the legs straight with the feet slightly turned in, and the pelvis level, because a tilted pelvis makes one hip look abnormal.
