Mandible

PA for the rami, axiolateral obliques for each side, and an AP axial for the condyles; the jaw is a ring, so look for two breaks.

The routine

The mandible is a ring with the skull, so a blow often breaks it in two places, frequently a body or angle on one side and the condyle on the other. A routine mandible series is a PA or PA axial, axiolateral obliques of both sides, and an AP axial for the condyles. Many departments also use a panoramic image, the orthopantomogram. For the PA, the patient faces the IR with the forehead and nose touching it and the OML perpendicular. The CR is perpendicular, exiting at the junction of the lips, and shows the rami and the body. A PA axial with the CR 20 to 25 degrees cephalad shows the rami and the condyles.
