Knee, Patella, Femur, Bone Surveys and Arthrography

Set the AP knee CR angle by ASIS-to-tabletop distance, and flex the lateral knee 20 to 30 degrees.

Knee Anatomy

The knee joint is formed by the medial and lateral femoral condyles resting on the tibial plateaus, cushioned by the menisci. The intercondylar fossa lies between the condyles, and the intercondylar eminence (tibial spines) rises from the tibia toward it. The patella, the largest sesamoid bone, glides on the femur at the patellofemoral joint. The fibular head joins the lateral tibia and does not reach the femur. The joint space lies about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) below the patellar apex, and the medial femoral condyle extends lower than the lateral.
