Foot and ankle

Angle 10 degrees toward the heel for the AP foot; rotate 15 to 20 degrees medially to open the ankle mortise.

Patient and part

For the AP foot, flex the knee and place the sole flat on the IR. For the oblique, rotate the foot 30 to 40 degrees medially. For the lateral foot, the lateral surface is down with the sole perpendicular to the IR. For the AP ankle, extend the leg and dorsiflex the foot so its long axis is vertical. For the mortise, rotate the whole leg and foot 15 to 20 degrees internally, until the intermalleolar line is parallel to the IR. The 45 degree oblique uses 45 degrees of internal rotation. The lateral ankle is taken lateral side down with the foot dorsiflexed.
