Imaging larger patients

Check weight limits, bring help, use landscape or two IRs, raise kVp first, use a grid, and keep the exposure time short.

Before the exam

Before imaging a patient with obesity, check the weight limits of the table, the upright stand, the fluoroscopy table and, for portable work, the wireless detector that will go under the patient. Bring enough staff and lift equipment for any transfer, and never try to move a heavy patient alone. Ask the patient how they move most comfortably, and have a wide gown and a chair without arms available.
